Is there any consistency of approach in interpreting Graphic Scores? When and why did this method of creating music emerge? What is the relationship between conventional and graphic notation? Are there degrees of aleatoricism in Graphic Scores? Using Umberto Eco’s writings on the Poetics of the Open Work as a framework through which these questions may be addressed, Chris will explore the diversity of relationships between performer, composer, Score and audience, situating them within related approaches in painting and literature.
